Hanging kitchens: captivating Appingedam

Look through the lens of a camera at the hanging kitchens, the narrow bridges and streets or the boats gliding over the Damsterdiep.

Where can you find the hanging kitchens?

You can check out the hanging kitchens from one of the special small bridges in the old town. Or admire them from the water, during a cruise on the Damsterveer.

The former warehouses are literally in the water of the Damsterdiep. Just above the water level was a kind of sidewalk with a door, through which the skippers could deliver their wares. Later, the warehouses were converted into homes. In addition, the residents made wooden extensions above the water, as a place for the kitchen. Hence the name hanging kitchens.

The Solwerderstraat is one of the oldest streets in Appingedam and was the center of activity. The warehouses, located directly on the water, are now shops and homes. In the past, ships came right up to the back of the buildings to unload and load.

After Groningen, Appingedam is the only medieval city in the province of Groningen. Mainly because of the iconic hanging kitchens, the medieval street pattern and the many national monuments, the city was awarded the designation 'Protected cityscape' in the 1970's.
